A Nigerian university community has been thrown into outrage after a shocking betrayal of trust involving a student leader and funds meant for a grieving coursemate.
According to a viral post shared by a lady online, her cousin, a course representative, was entrusted with coordinating a class contribution after one of their colleagues lost his father. Each student reportedly donated ₦5,000, bringing the total to a staggering ₦800,000 intended to support burial arrangements.
The course representative allegedly diverted ₦400,000 for personal use rather than providing the payments. Before trying to "recover" the money through sports betting, he spent ₦350,000 on a new phone for his fiancée and an additional ₦50,000 on treating her. His plan hinged on staking the remaining ₦400,000 on a two-odds game.It failed. The entire amount was lost.
Facing the consequences, the student reportedly fled campus before the burial date and switched off his phone, leaving classmates confused and the bereaved student without support.
In a desperate attempt to salvage the situation, family members intervened, even contacting the girlfriend to return the expensive phone. She asked whether anyone in her position would return it in a direct and unrepentant manner.
To cover part of the loss, the family allegedly sold the student’s personal belongings, including his iPhone 13, a refrigerator, and a generator. In a twist that has fueled even more reactions online, the same girlfriend has now reportedly ended the relationship, citing his financial downfall.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, raising questions about accountability, trust, and the growing culture of gambling among young Nigerians.
