President Tinubu Gives Up Every Naira of His Salary Since 2023 for Soldiers’ Welfare Fund

In a move that is already stirring conversation across the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to donate all his salary earnings since assuming office in May 2023 to a newly created welfare fund for Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
The announcement came on Sunday as the president marked his 74th birthday, choosing reflection and recognition over celebration. Tinubu honored the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel, operational and deceased, in a statement he personally signed.
“On this, my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” he stated before unveiling the directive that has since caught national attention.

According to the president, he has instructed the accountant-general of the Federation to set up a dedicated account that will serve as a support system for wounded soldiers, active personnel, and the families of those who lost their lives in service to the nation.
The proposed fund is designed to address long-standing concerns about the welfare of military families, particularly those left behind after tragic losses on the frontlines. While symbolic in nature, Tinubu’s decision also puts a spotlight on broader questions around institutional support, accountability, and sustainable funding for the armed forces.
For many Nigerians, the gesture is being interpreted in different ways. Some see it as a commendable act of leadership and sacrifice.while others argue that structural reforms and consistent government backing will matter far more than personal donations in the long run.
Still, the timing and tone of the announcement suggest a deliberate attempt to connect with the military community and acknowledge their role in national security at a moment when morale and support systems remain critical.
Whether this move sparks a wider culture of accountability among public officials or remains a one-off gesture will likely depend on what follows next.

But for now, the message is clear:

The President is putting his own earnings on the line in recognition of those who have risked everything for Nigeria.
